Segmentation, An Example
"I know personalization is important. I just do not know how to do it. Sometimes I even do Dear ~firstname~ wrong."
~ Richard Samuels, Affiliate Partner.

We
have all gotten those letters like Richard mentions that start
"Dear ~firstname~". The variable was improperly designated and thus
never populated with my name.
That leaves a very negative impression.
A friend of mine sent an automated email to his list (I was on that
list) and he put in the variable ~firstname~ when he should have put in
~FIRSTNAME~. Case matters.
But personalization matters too. With TrafficWave you draw the Personalized Variables from a drop down list so it is hard to go wrong.
I received an email today that it is SO TRUE. The subject line read, "Getting to know your customers is more important than getting them."
The article was all about one to one personalization, knowing your
customer, knowing your audience. This is essential, but how do we do it?
It is called List Segmentation, but How do you Segment your list?
Here is an example from an email I sent today...
First I have built a list of people interested in Protecting themselves Online. Two approaches I take to build that list are
1. Landing pages for Affiliate Marketers emphasizing the need to be
real and transparent vs the risk of exposing too much personal
information.
2. Posts and landing pages offering free ways and best practices on protecting yourself online.
When people sign up they are expecting and looking for advice regarding
protecting themselves. This is my "Protect" campaign. I promote ID
theft services and ebooks.
Now I know some people on this list are specifically in marketing and
may be interested in other offers I have. But I am not going to abuse
my list by posting non-relevant topics or products.
So I want to "segment out" or identify those who may value, in this case, from email marketing. So this is what I do.
In a letter identifying 3 scammer emails I conclude with:
Two Concerns Here:
1. Be careful.
2. If you're an online marketer do not spam or scam, write your emails in a GMAIL Friendly way.
"GMAIL Friendly" is a hyper-link leading to a free paper on Writing
emails without being spammy. When a member of my Protect List clicks
that link they are offered the paper and added to a campaign called EmailTips.
Now they're getting what they want and I am not bothering the others on my Protect list with that information.
That is one way of segmenting your list. My members are telling me what they want and I am respecting their choices.
